OK, aparantly the solution is not to use an initrd (Thanks Mike).

I still can't boot 2.3.14 though - it goes through to the "Detected Intel
PIIX4 ACPI interface at 0x9000" and goes into an infinate SCSI bus timeout
loop. I'm going to disable the ACPI setting and try again later.
