sym53c8xx trouble

Have a Siemens Primergy 870-40 box with a Toschiba XM-6401TA CDROM (Rev 1403)
and a Quantum DLT 7000 attached to the second onboard Symbios 53c876
SCSI adapter.

2.2.10 comes up just fine _if_ a CD is in the drive during sym53c8xx init
but it hangs if there's none after the driver message
"command processing resumed".

Any ideas?
