my system went down when news.daily & updatedb were run at the same time I
recall. it's a P5-100 which is easily brought to it's knees.

now that I see your messages, I recall I have seen such stuff too. my system
went completely wild when quotas were turned off in order to restart.

note that my system wasn't able to fix it anymore. I lost the root file
system completely.
