Not necessarily, I use autofs which ends up doing what you've written
above. So, it doesn't have to be a password caching problem.

Hmm, never thought about the server going down/up (not an unlikely event).
Maybe that is what happened for me. Someday when there are less people
around I'll test this. (else someone might get a bit upset :)
What happens for you when the server disappears? Do you get the same I/O
error message that started this thread?
