2.0.36 pppd hangs

My ppp conection runs for a certain ammount of time
sometimes hours
sometimes only a few minutes

then it freezes , no packets getting through

I run ppp-off
i get this loged
Apr 1 12:30:44 potato pppd[376]: write: Interrupted system call

I was about 30-40 seconds , then i run ppp-off again

and
Apr 1 12:31:05 potato pppd[376]: Terminating on signal 2.
Apr 1 12:31:36 potato pppd[376]: Exit.

then i hear that little click

root@potato:~# uname -a ; uptime
Linux potato 2.0.36 #10 Sun Feb 14 19:59:56 NZDT 1999 i486 unknown
12:36pm up 12 min, 8 users, load average: 0.06, 0.20, 0.18

kernel does ipmasq
ppp is a module
also have an ne2000 clone in here...
