pppd probs in 2.2.x

Hi all,

I've been having trouble getting pppd running on 2.2.3/2.2.5.
It runs fine on 2.2.1.
I have ppp compiled into the kernel, but when I run pppd, the
log file reports that it couldn't find the ppp0 module. Subsequent
attempts to run pppd result in:

139 sigaction(SIGPIPE, {SIG_IGN}, NULL) = 0
139 _exit(1) = ?

Why am I getting EIO? I've tried with pppd-2.3.5 compiled with
gcc 2.7.2.3, pppd-2.3.5 compiled with egcs-1.1.1, and pppd-2.3.6 compiled
with egcs-1.1.2.

After getting the EIO, I ran minicom to see if that'll work. minicom
reported that the modem was online. So I told it to hang up the line, to send
a break, and even disconnected the phone cord for about 2 min. minicom still
thought the line was active.

binutils: 2.9.1.0.19a
gcc: egcs-1.1.2

Where should I look? The kernel or pppd?
