`Out of memory for cc1' in linux-2.2.4

After compiling linux-2.2.4 and rebooting to it:

russell@dalles[~] $ uname -a
Linux dalles 2.2.4 #1 Tue Mar 23 19:26:05 PST 1999 i586 unknown

P133, with 96 meg RAM.

I have been seeing some `out of memory' messages this evening while
configuring/ compiling CLISP-1999-01-08 with gcc-2.8.1/glibc-2.1.
At the command line, I am seeing things like:

out of memory for cc1
gcc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 9

and in /var/adm/messages, the sort of messages as follow:

The messages seem to occur somewhat at random. Rerunning `make' seems
to get me past the purported problem spots.
