I figured it was probably external as the Teac CDR I have is external.

Which is the same as what I am using.

"Enable vendor-specific extensions (for SCSI CDROM)" is what I meant. The scsi
cdr may be using a command not used by the other devices.

Not certain what else to tell you... Are you using the current version of
XCD-Roast?
