'D' state problem with 2.2.1

I'm using kernel 2.2.1. It's worked fine till today. Today, every process
that tried to access /var began hanging in 'D' state (uninterruptable sleep).

Nothing appeared in dmesg, I had to reboot the system to fix it.

Ugh.
