I've got both AWE64 and GUS MAX in my machine; the .config shown
below works for me.

===
CONFIG_SOUND=m
CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=m
CONFIG_SOUND_SB=m
CONFIG_SOUND_ADLIB=m
CONFIG_SOUND_GUS=m
CONFIG_GUSMAX=y
CONFIG_SOUND_MPU401=m
CONFIG_SOUND_SOFTOSS=m
CONFIG_SOUND_YM3812=m
CONFIG_SOUND_VMIDI=m
===

In /etc/modules.conf I have:

===
options gus io=0x220 irq=7 dma=6 dma16=7
options sb io=0x240 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
pre-install gus /sbin/isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf; /sbin/modprobe uart401; /sbin/modprobe sb; /sbin/modprobe awe_wave; /sbin/modprobe opl3; /sbin/modprobe softoss2; /usr/local/bin/sfxload
===

Of course you have to run isapnp before you insert modules for SB;
here's my /etc/isapnp.conf:

===
