I'm using 2.2.0-pre9 with net-tools 1.49 and pppd 2.3.5
First of all, ifconfig shows thousands of TX/RX errors on ppp and lo
devices. Also when connecting two Linux boxen through PPP it moves like
Windows^Wa snail.

I really think that it should be fixed before releasing 2.2.0. :)
Secondly, in Documentation/Changes pppd 2.3.5 is specified as required
version. However it does not compile on current kernel (2.2.0-final):
