You wouldn't be running XFree86 3.3 with the 3DLabs driver, would you?
It causes this exact problem.
There are fixed 3.3.1 drivers on ftp.xfree86.org. It is sufficient to
get the binary driver and copy XF86_3DLabs on top of the old one.
