You may try <ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/keyboards/
console-tools-1998.08.11.tar.gz> instead of kbd. I don't know what has
changed in kernel and whether console-tools will help. But AFAIK they
support some new font loading ioctl()s.
