The smbmount from the samba 1.9.x package will not compile on glibc
systems. Some people have some patches, but that that line is not being
updated any more, so I doubt any 1.9.x smbmount ever will.

The smbmount in Samba 2.0 has some changes in it to cover some timing
problems. The latest patches fixed the timing problem but introduced a new
problem (wrong process is registered with the driver as the daemon process).
I'm trying to get both problems fixed without causing even worse random
acts of terrorism. The one in samba 2.0.0-beta5 should mount properly
for you, it just won't reconnect properly (which the older one for Linux
2.0.36 would never do anyways).

Best advise is to get the Samba 2.0 package from samba.org and
rebuild with that. It is still beta code, but we are getting close to
release. I hope to have another round of fixes into smbmount by the
release.
