Actually, this is not a bad idea since for its intended purpose the
string describes the system quite sufficiently. The string is supposed
to be human and machine readable, which it is, and it leaves enough
space (your proposal contains 41 characters, maybe 40 as recommended
maximum size is more convenient) to be placed into the context of a
line. This doesn't even have to be a rigid standard, a common agreement
and a friendly business practice would probably quite suffice.

For example kernel-arch-baselib-source-distro-version would look
something along the lines of:
linux-ia32-glibc2-gnu-debian-3.0
linux-alpha-glibc2-gnu-redhat-6.0
