What's the problem with the following approach:
pnpdump -c > /etc/isapnp.conf
isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
script.that.parses./etc/isapnp.conf.and.sets.module_parms.in./etc/modules.conf
which is what I do for my soundcard.
