This is similar to someone's suggestion of being able to output
".config"-type information from /proc, an idea that seems to have been
rejected. (I don't know why other people rejected it, but my thoughts
are that it is better just to save a renamed .config file in the same
directory as the saved System.map -- which is what I do.)

Presumably the same philosophy applies to patch information.

(I agree that the rest of what you've written would be advantageous,
though.)
