If you look at the XINU license (http://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/dec/xlicense.ht
ml) you'll note that it's fairly liberal. I think the only person who would
have a problem with mixing and matching XINU and Linux code would be RMS. If
your advisor will let you do it, I think it would be great experience for what
works best in the real world. OTOH, others have made the point that a year of
coding for research would probably be better spent working on something new,
which I wholeheartedly agree with.
