Copying from Zip drive uses 80% CPU in 2.1.131ac10 (only 3% in 2.0.36)

I was copying a large (90mb) from my ATAPI zip drive to my hard drive
and I noticed that X was rather unresponsive (e.g. the cursor was
jerky). I ran top and noticed that 'cp' was taking 80% of CPU time. I
rebooted into 2.0.36 and tried copying the file again, and top showed
that cp was only taking 2 or 3% CPU.

Does anyone have any idea why this happens and how to fix it?

I have tried playing with hdparm but this had very little effect.

My zip drive is secondary slave, (secondary master is a creative CDROM),
I was copying to a 5 gig fujitsu UDMA drive (primary master) (primary
slave is a 500mb maxtor drive).

Francis.
