Help, severe probs with 10 GB IDE-HD on 2.0.35!

Hi,

since yesterday, I own a new system with a nice 10 gig Fujitsu
EIDE-HD. The first try to simply copy my linux stuff on the
fdisk-partitioned _succeeded_, but failed to boot.
While investigating for the reason, I tried mke2fs -c, which
raised regularly failures.
After partitioning with dos7 fdisk, the system seems to work
fine, but suddenly the errors reappeared (make -j zImage modules).
It was the swap partition, I forgot to create with mkswap -c, and
one other p. currently (/var).

A hint on Andre's UDMA-webpage and studying those diffs,
I begun to realize, that there's something really odd, isn't it?

Could it be, that most linux-kernels has a hardcoded limit
of 1023 cylinders? If this is true, and if there's a patch
for the 2.0 kernel series available, I kindly ask you to send
it to me (I wouldn't be disappointed, if this would include a
BM-DMA driver for the ALI 1543 ;-) but the former is far more
important for me (as for others in my situation...)

If I'm wrong, any clues welcome.

Here an excerpt of the error messages:
