... but one big disadvantage, if you have different home directories on
different machines. If you have the same home directory on different
machines, it's likely to be NFS mounted. -> same problem with locking
etc., but less likely that you're doing operations on different
machines simultaneosly.

Why not, if it locks the file and all parties use the same locking protocols?
I appreciate that locking does not always have the right effect. Hence
my recent patch to resync the cache when a file is locked.

I think this is only better if the mailbox file is renamed so that
further deliveries create a new file. Does Emacs do this?
