But in the present context (100000 users), those things would break anyway
since they don't support that many users. So I believe that it should indeed
be possible to get a working kernel with 32bit-UIDs and with working
applications (using glibc, of course).
Backwards compatibility would be lacking a little, but it might be acceptable
since (except for a few binary only applications that are still libc5-only
(such as acroread, which makes the plugin unsueable on the RedHat version of
Netscape)) most applications would work.
I'd say "go for it".
