[OFFTOPIC INFO REQUEST] Kernel Optimizer Project?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has started working on such a project yet:

There are nice settings in proc that can be looked at and adjusted. A nice
system with 512M (of which there is at least one that I know) would probably
need different defaults than the 486DX2/66 with 20M that I use for my home
firewall. There values in proc can be fiddled with, but Joe user would
probably be intimidated by such a prospect. A userspace utility that can be
run occasionally to tune the system may be a big performance win. Does such
a project exist?

If not, where are the best docs to look into doing this? (I know, use the
source, Luke... I'm also pretty good with Documentation/) I'd probably need
to know what is available via proc (or better methods,) what they mean, and
how to look at any kernel profiling info in userspace. I'd bet I can figure
it out looking at just source given time, but I'm mainly an evil C++ app
programmer (aerospace by degree) and I'm just not as good as you guys at
kernel work. I'm about as comfortable in there as you all would probably be
in one of my kayaks at the top of a 20 foot waterfall.

I'd love to do my part. Any suggestion would be appreciated. (BTW, yes. I
am expecting just about everybody to tell me to look in the source.)

-Eric ;-)
