This is a known problem with the alpha...apparently the floppy initializing
code runs so fast on the alpha that it can cause it to hang. There are
patches out there that fix this by inserting a delay into the floppy
initialization code.
Patches exist, look for them in the kernel archives and maybe the
axp-list@redhat.com archives. (I don't have an exact reference handy)
We should get this patch permanently incorporated into the kernel. If you
find it and fix it, please submit it to Linus.
