2.1.x doesn't let me load modules. :(

hi everyone,
forgive me for spamming the list with this (kind of) newbie question,
anyway, i'm upgrading from 2.0.35 to 2.1.x kernels, so i got 2.1.128,
and patched it to 2.1.129pre2, and configured and compiled it.. no
problems there..
make menuconfig ; make bzImage ; make modules ; make modules_install

but when i boot up my system "depmod -a" gives me unresolved symbols in
ALL modules,
and when i try to actually load a module, it gives me unresolved symbols
in those too, even "printk" is unresolved.
i could live without modules if it weren't for the ip-masqing stuff that
requires modules..
Ok, the system is a stamped linux dist. with the latest (i think)
binutils (2.9.1)
the latest modutils (2.1.121) .. gcc 2.8.1, i don't think that's the
recomended version.. but the version problem doesn't cause this right ?
my RH5.1 system at work has gcc 2.7.2.3 .. that's the only difference i
can find between the two.. (my work system is running 2.1.128 without a
problem, and can load modules fine), oh, and ipchains is also compiled
and installed..
anyway could someone please point me in the right direction? i'm
obviously missing something..
if you need to know anything, just email me, hell i'll even give you a
shell acct. if you want to look around for yourself..

thanks for your time,
