Personally, I had problems with the kernel module loader using the ld.so that
comes with glibc-2.0.7* distros, but they instantly went away after installing
ld.so-1.9.9 . Notably the 3dfx module.

I simply may be mis-understanding its role in the module process, but such is
my experience...
