18 * 30 / 100 = 5.4 months, actually.. :)

I have to agree with you there, except for little snippets of code. If
you can get a localized 30% speed improvement here, and another 30% there,
you end up with a faster kernel without trading in kernel "openness" since
all the changes are well encapsulated.. IMHO, of course.
