egcs-2.91.57 (aka egcs-1.1 release) would not produce a working 2.1.127
for me. I built 2.1.128 with gcc-2.7.2.3 (as supplied with RedHat 5.1
Intel) and it seems fine (after an exhaustive 5-minute test..).
