I think it is good you are investigating this. I tried your program
but could not get it to trigger the problem. On the other hand, I was
not quite sure how to invoke it. I did

fork-test 2 <filelist

with filelist being the file name of the fork-test source repeated a
lot of times.

It seems to reach 20000 without a problem. (I then stopped it to write
this mail).

My hardware has nothing in common with yours. On the other hand, my
software is mostly like yours; RedHat 5 plus additions, egcs-2.91.57,
and glibc 2.0.7 - could this be due to another egcs problem?

It seems like a lot of people are seeing this problem, unfortunately.
I have only seen it once, though (2.1.127). I do not believe that I
was doing anything intensive at the time but I am not entirely
certain.
