No console in 2.1.128

My sincere apologies if this has already been covered while I was away, but
with the last 3 kernels or so, my machine no longer gives me a console,
although otherwise, the machine works fine. Kernels up to and including
2.1.125 worked great. Any suggestions?

The machine is a 486DX 33 with 16MB of RAM

Linux version 2.1.128 (root@plastic) (gcc version egcs-2.90.29 980515
(egcs-1.0.3 release))
