Sorry to follow up my own post, but this problem appears to have gone away
after a 'make clean'.

Whether a problem like that can be considered a kernel bug is up to the
individual - it probably depends on how long it takes you to recompile from
scratch, and how much you enjoy doing so just because you can't trust the
automatic dependencies.
