IDE tape problem, 2.0.35

Greetings! Occasionally, in the middle of a backup, the tape freezes
with the following report in the kernel log:

Nov 4 04:31:54 intech9 kernel: ide-tape: hdb: DSC timeout.

lsof shows nothing using the device, though the external LED is lit.
Subsequent attempts to try 'mt status' yield a hung mt process,
perpetually sleeping in uninterruptible mode.

ps ax |grep mt
16086 ? D 0:00 mt sta
16831 p1 S 0:00 grep mt

The only way to restore functionality is to reboot.

intech9# uname -a
Linux intech9 2.0.35 #1 Thu Sep 17 16:05:52 EDT 1998 i486 unknown
