Subject: Another design win for Forth! Forth for FreeBSD's new boot
loader
Date: Wed, 04 Nov 1998 07:12:30 GMT

Looks like Forth has found a home within FreeBSD's new boot loader!
Ficl seems to be the leading contender for the moment and has been
incorporated into their CVS repository. One of their very capable core
developers is presently working on the loader.

Perhaps a more traditional directly threaded Forth implementation would
have been more efficient but Ficl seems to be an acceptable compromise
for now and will be easy to port to Alpha as well. Just getting Forth
averse programmers onboard was a fair hassle so we're happy that a
consensus seems to have been reached WRT Forth's viability for this
application.

Comments and suggestions ( and Forth coders ;-) solicited...

Cheers,

Jerry Hicks
