I thought it was something broken here in the network! But, yes, I've
noticed a sharp drop in NFS read rates in the past kernel or two. I used
to see about 4000+ K/sec. in both directions (talking to another box
running 2.1.x). Now, it's incredibly slow. We're talking write
throughput of > 4000+ K/sec. and read timings of < 1000. The slow read
timings are accompanied by huge levels of network activity and server disk
activity, so I concur with your analysis of read-ahead acting broken.

Writes seem unaffected. Bill Hawes? Any ideas?
