XL-233 and NE2000 interrupt

I've noticed that on kernels more recent that 2.1.108 (starting in the
mid-teens somewhere, I will have to compile a few of them to work out
which one exactly) the NE2000 probe finds the base (0x300) of the ISA
NE2000 card in my XL without any trouble, but is unable to determine
it's interrupt. (currently 10)

While I realize autoprobing isn't the best way to go, I'm surprised that
it stopped working so recently.

When I either try to load it as a module with specified parameters, or
use the ether= boot tag for the card, the kernel spews many many 'eth0:
interrupt from stopped card' messages and to all intents and purposes
ceases to be useful.

My latest kernel config is available at
http://www.iinet.net.au/~packrat/private/config
and this behaviour is present in at least kernels 117, 124, 126,
127pre3.
