I had an "interesting" (read: #$%#$% irritating) one last night
also (albeit in 2.1.125).

I did a similar thing - tty2 was allocated but getty was killed
(I had changed runlevels from tty2, my rl5 only has one getty)

The keyboard just started going nuts sporadically. It would
randomly duplicate keypresses. It would frequently get stuck
with caps lock activated (although all keyboard lights were off)
and I'd have to tap caps lock or shift a few times to toggle
it back to normal. The key repeat rate was slower than normal,
too.

After I quit X, changed runlevels back to 3 (with 6 gettys),
the problem disappeared.

I use the regular vgacon fwiw.
