One of my Suns had a similar problem. It was "managed" by a sysadmin.
The ROM password had not been set so I booted SU, mounted '/',
copied /etc/passwd. Changed the root password, ran `pwconv`, and
continued the boot. Then I modified the script that crontab executed,
copied the old password file back, ran `pwconv` and logged out. The
sysadm was happy because he never knew anything was changed. The
sysadm lasted about a year, got a new job and moved on. Everybody
was happy. They come and go.

Since linux machines can be booted on a floppy, even Alphas, you
should be able to fix the problem without attracting any attention,
and the wrath of those who think they know best.
