SCSI Disk Error (2.1.125 and 2.1.126)

Twice in the last two weeks I've had a lockup on 2.1.125 and 2.1.126 that
required me to do a hard reboot.
My question is twofold:
#1 - Why does the entire system lockup (i.e. no CTL-ALT-DEL, ALT-SYSRQ or
anything) while the SCSI is resetting and getting SENSEKEY errors?
#2 - Would the software watchdog detect this and unmount the disks to avoid
having to fsck everything on re-boot?
#3 - Would the software watchdog also unmount the RAID partitions to avoid
having to resync & fsck on reboot?
#4 - Is there a way to allow the boot to background the fsck for the
non-root disks? That is, allow it to finish booting while fsck'ing the rest
of the disks?
