linux-2.1.127pre1 (and earlier!): 'make modules' redoes everything

I kind of noticed this some versions back, and got hit hard by it today:
drivers/scsi/sd.c is broken (at least for module compiling). I replaced it
with the one in 2.1.126pre2ac2, and a new "make modules" started at the
beginning. Seems the whole smart dependency machinery stopped working.

i586, egcs-1.1a, binutils-2.9.1.0.15, glibc-2.0.98
