The problem is that all but the highest quality audio tape
deck tend to have horrendous jitter in the tape speed. This jitter
introduces nonlinear distortions, and as soon as you have this
you've basically lost.

Frequency response OTOH is a linear distortion, and rather
easy to cope with...

So to conclude, the only parameter that IMHO might make
sense to do tunable is the data rate, the rest should (and could)
be automatic...
