Well, I just mailed Riley Williams, but in reponse to the followup:

I had the same experience on a clean new Slackware 3.5 that Riley
had on RedHat. I've been compiling ppp-2.3.5 on a variety of
kernels. Perhaps you are right an "it's my system", but I don't
think so.
