Tim Smith asks driver writers to declare themselves.

Since I don't think that the battle is Unix vs Microsoft, but open
source vs closed source, I don't consider Solaris, HP-UX, or SCO to
have much to do with Linux. Although they are better designed than NT,
and allow people to use their computers more effectively than NT (let
alone Win/Whatever) they are predicated on the idea that its better
not to let users have access to the source. A world full of x86's
running Solaris would be a better world than one full of x86's running
NT, but in neither case would we be able to read the scheduling code.
This doesn't mean I have a big axe to grind with Solaris etc., just
that I don't have any interest in their success.

I therefore have very little interest in writing device drivers in a
way that will support the use of those kinds of Unix systems. UDI
seems mostly just irrelevant to me. Linux is the only open source Unix
system that I consider worthwhile supporting, and it has a very nice
device driver interface. If the UDI extended to BeOS, I might have
some interest in it, but not much, since as fabulous as BeOS is for
certain things, its still closed source.
