This already exists, and it is called nfs. It is not ideal, but it
pretty well does what it is expected to do. Look at
http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~pavel/podfuk/podfuk.html (tar
filesystems, transparent ungz, zip, rar etc. are working.)
