It's just a variation on a well-known btree indexing algorithm, and
the idea that I might have been the first person that this hack occurred
to is laughable.

Whether someone codes it up and it makes it into 2.2.x, 2.1.x, 2.3.x, gets
backported to 2.0.x or no one ever uses it at all makes no difference to
me. If I think I need it coded my way and no one else codes it that way,
I guess I know what my options are.
