Puzzling Hangs with 2.1.118 & .119

I've been having very good results with 2.1.11x series kernels until
very recently.

My system is very stable with kernel 2.1.116 and .117. Upon upgrading
to 2.1.118 (and it continues with 2.1.119 which I just compiled), it's
quite flaky.

System seems stable after booting, UNLESS I START X. Then it will hang
solidly (keyboard & mouse locked) within a couple minutes, and doesn't
log anything to syslog.

This is completely repeatable. Both 2.1.118 and .119 do it EACH TIME
I start X.

And the second strange thing is that every 2nd or 3rd time I boot,
the system panics during boot.

Dropping back to 2.1.116 or .117 restores my system to stability.

Without anything getting logged to SYSLOG, I am unsure as to how to
provide better info or debug it.

Very wierd.
