cannot acces parent Dir?

I'm trying to compile 117 and I keep getting this:

shell-init: could not get current directory: getwd: cannot access parent directories

As a result, I can't even do a "makde menuconfig". I've tried this on
2.1.116 and a 2.1.117 that I compiled on another machine.
