This is a FAQ.

add mem=128M to your "append" parameter in your /etc/lilo.conf, for each
of your linux boot options. If you don't have any "append" lines yet,
add them. If you're not using lilo, consult your boot loader documentation
for the proper way to pass "mem=128M" to your kernel.

Or get a more recent kernel; the 2.1 kernels have supported more thorough
BIOS interrogation for a while. Other than this, there is no particular
reason to recompile the kernel when changing amounts of memory.
