losing interrupts after returning from suspend

running completely unmodified 2.1.115 on a notebook (Kapok 8500)
i find that i cannot suspend when running X
i get a completely wedged machine (mouse,kbd will not respond)
if not running X then most of the time it appears to be ok
but i do seem to get my pcmcia cards in a bit of a twist

any ideas/suggestions
moved from 2.0.34 to try and get the pcmcia to work (and it did)
