I upgraded from egcs-2.91.43 (980628) to egcs-2.91.53 (980803), changed the
compilation flags (from -mpentiumpro to -mpentiumpro -malign-functions=4
-fschedule-insns2) and the floppy driver is happy again.

I therefore think the bug was causewd by the egcs, always being (too?)
aggressive in optimization. (Might also be a kernel bug, missing a volatile,
or similar.)
I also noticed, that optimization became a little bit worse in the latest
snapshot.
