If that is with vgacon, then this pseudopatch should help you (it is a part
of a large patch, but I don't have time right now to make it (or you can
check it out from vger CVS)):

drivers/char/console.c:

vt_cons[currcons] = NULL;
return -ENOMEM;
}
- con_set_default_unimap(currcons);
+ if (!*vc_cons[currcons].d->vc_uni_pagedir_loc)
+ con_set_default_unimap(currcons);
screenbuf = (unsigned short *) q;
kmalloced = 1;
